Capel’s know-how is the legacy of several decades of experience in the ready-to-wear known as “large size”.

The label that dresses the generously built, the burly, the athletic and the long-limbed — in short, everyone whose size is not standard.
The brand’s origins go back to 1958. On a trip to the United States, Raymond-Henri Capel discovered that ready-to-wear designed specially for heavily built men existed.

His mother ran a clothing workshop in Paris where she made made-to-measure garments for “les hommes forts des Halles”, the well-off butchers of the market district whose trade often left them heavily built.

He took the workshop over, on Boulevard de Sébastopol, and turned it into his first large-size ready-to-wear shop, today one of the retailer’s flagship stores. Capel grandes tailles was born. The brand has moved with the times and answered the expectations of successive generations in terms of comfort, fashion and appeal: from the intellectuals of the 70s and the golden boys of the 8os to the politicians of the 90s and today’s tech lovers.

Ever stronger demand to satisfy

Taller and broader than ever, men struggle to find clothes in their size easily in the shops. For some time now, just as with their female counterparts, men with these imposing builds have been taken into account by brands, which are making sure they offer large-size collections.

In France, average build is growing faster and faster. As a reminder, the average Frenchman weighs 77.4 kg and stands 175.6 cm tall, compared with 72 kg and 170.1 cm in 1970, according to the latest national campaign by the French Textile and Clothing Institute.

A 2006 study by TNS Worldpanel Fashion already showed that the large-size market accounted for 22% of households buying womenswear and 39% for menswear.
